Court sentences businessman to 3 years’ imprisonment for trafficking in drugs

A Federal High Court in Lagos has sentenced a 42-year- old businessman, Ifeanyi Obori, to three years’ imprisonment for drug trafficking.

Justice Kuewumi in his judgment found the accused guilty as charged and sentenced him to three years’ imprisonment.
Kuewumi said the imprisonment period would begin from the date of the convict’s arrest.
The convict was charged with trafficking in drugs by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
The NDLEA arraigned him before Justice Babs Kuewumi, where he pleaded guilty to the charge.
After his plea, the prosecutor, Mr Jeremiah Aernan, reviewed the facts of the case before the court.
Aernan tendered a statement written by the convict, a request for scientific aid form, and a drug analysis form.
He also tendered the remnant of the narcotic substances found on him before the court as evidence.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the evidence were, accordingly, admitted by the court and marked as exhibits.
According to the charge sheet, the convict was said to have unlawfully engaged in trafficking of 700 g of Cannabis Sativa, also known as hemp.
He was said to have been arrested on May 17, 2017 at Orile Market in Orile-Iganmu, a suburb of Lagos, where he was trading in the narcotics.
According to the prosecution, the convict was, accordingly, arrested and charged.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the offence of drug trafficking contravenes Section 11 (c) of the NDLEA Act, Cap N30 Laws of the Federation, 2004.

Family declines autopsy for U.S. student released by North Korea

An Ohio coroner, abiding by family wishes, has performed an external examination instead of a full autopsy on the body of the U.S. student who was held prisoner in North Korea for 17 months and sent home in a coma, the agency said on Tuesday. The Hamilton County Coroner's Office was still conferring on Tuesday with doctors at a Cincinnati hospital who were treating Otto Warmbier, 22, before reaching any conclusions about his death a day earlier, investigator Daryl Zornes said. Investigators also were continuing to review radiological images and awaiting additional medical records requested by the coroner, Zornes said. He declined to estimate how long it would take for the coroner's office to complete its inquiry. Preliminary autopsy findings had been expected later on Tuesday or on Wednesday. There was no immediate word from the family about why relatives declined an autopsy, which may have shed more light on the cause of the neurological injuries that left him in a com...

Uber Founder Travis Kalanick Resigns as C.E.O

Uber Founder Travis Kalanick                                                                                                     Travis Kalanick stepped down Tuesday as chief executive of Uber, the ride-hailing service that he helped found in 2009 and that he built into a transportation colossus, after a shareholder revolt made it untenable for him to stay on at the company. Mr. Kalanick’s exit came under pressure after hours of drama involving Uber’s investors, according to two people with knowledge of the situation, who asked to remain anonymous because the details are confidential. Earlier on Tuesday, five of Uber’s major investors demanded that the chief executive resign immediately. The investors included one of Uber’s biggest ...
